Angioplasty is a medical procedure used to unblock or widen narrowed blood vessels that provide blood flow to the heart.
To treat peripheral artery disease (PAD) and its symptoms of pain, cramping, and ulcers in the extremities, a combination of techniques is used. First, a balloon is inflated within the narrowed or blocked artery to widen it and improve blood flow. Then, a stent—similar to a small mesh tube—is inserted to keep the vessel open and prevent re-narrowing. This procedure, known as peripheral angioplasty, has been proven essential in managing PAD and significantly enhancing patients’ mobility and quality of life by improving blood circulation. Additionally, it lowers the risk of severe complications associated with impaired peripheral circulation.
A coronary artery stent is a tiny tube made of metal mesh that is inserted into a narrowed coronary artery. Typically, it is placed during or shortly after angioplasty to prevent the artery from narrowing again. Some stents are coated with medication that is released over time to help keep the artery open for an extended period.
Following the procedure, you will either be taken to the recovery room for monitoring or brought back to your hospital room. If the catheter was inserted through a blood vessel in your groin or leg, you will need to lie flat in bed for several hours afterward. A nurse will continuously monitor your vital signs and check on the insertion site to ensure proper circulation and sensation in the affected limb.
