During Herniorrhaphy, also known as hernia repair surgery, a surgeon will make an incision in the abdomen above the affected area. Any protruding intestine is gently pushed back into the abdomen and the opening in the muscle wall is carefully repaired. In some cases, a mesh reinforcement may be used to strengthen the weakened area, known as hernioplasty
Hernia repair surgery is of three types:
Inguinal hernias
Surgery is the standard method for treating inguinal hernias, and there are various surgical approaches to choose from, such as using a mesh, performing an open repair, or using laparoscopy.
Umbilical hernias
Most umbilical hernias close by age 5, with some closing on their own by age 1. Surgery may be needed if there is pain, dysfunction, or enlargement, and the approach depends on the size and other factors.
Ventral hernias
Ventral hernia repair can be performed through various surgical methods, such as open surgery, laparoscopy, and robotic procedures
