An Implantable Cardioverter-Cefibrillator (ICD) is a small device placed within the chest during surgery to keep track of and manage abnormal heart rhythms. It is powered by a battery and helps regulate the heart’s beating pattern.
There are two main types of ICDs: a traditional version that is implanted in the chest, with wires called leads connecting to the heart; and a subcutaneous version (S-ICD) that is placed under the skin below the armpit and attached to an electrode. Unlike the traditional ICD, the S-ICD does not come into contact with the heart and is larger.
