RFA, also known as radiofrequency ablation, is a less invasive method used to reduce the size of tumours, nodules, or any other growths within the body.
The process of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) involves using heat to eliminate tissue. In terms of pain management, precisely placed needles transmit radio waves to heat-specific nerves. The purpose is to prevent pain signals from being relayed to the brain. RFA is typically recommended for chronic pain conditions, particularly in the neck, lower back, or arthritic joints that haven’t responded to other treatments.
The technique is comparable to a fine needle biopsy, where a probe is inserted into the body. The probe emits radiofrequency waves that target the tissue around it, causing nearby cells to perish. As these cells die off and are cleared out by the immune system, an internal response occurs which often leads to shrinkage of the nodule.
